Sistemul european comun de azil/Comisia Europeană,Direcţia Generală Afaceri Interne -  2014.- 8 p.

Azilul se acordă persoanelor care fug de acte de persecuție sau de vătămări grave. Dreptul la azil este un drept fundamental; acordarea acestuia reprezintă o obligație internațională prevăzută în Convenția privind protecția refugiaților încheiată la Geneva în 1951. Într-un spațiu al frontierelor deschise și al liberei circulații, este necesară o abordare comună în materie de azil pe întregul teritoriu al Uniunii Europene. Fluxurile de solicitanți de azil nu sunt constante și nu sunt distribuite în mod uniform pe întregul teritoriu al Uniunii Europene. Acestea au variat, de exemplu, de la un număr maxim de 425 000 de cereri pentru statele UE-27 în 2001, până la mai puțin de 200 000 în 2006. În 2012, s-au înregistrat peste 330 000 de cereri. Azilul nu trebuie să reprezinte o loterie. Statele membre ale UE au responsabilitatea comună de a asigura primirea solicitanților de azil întrun mod demn, garantând faptul că aceștia sunt tratați în mod echitabil și că situația lor este examinată în baza unor standarde uniforme, astfel încât, indiferent de statul vizat de solicitant, rezultatul să fie similar
